Irmo, S.C. (WACH) - Lexington-Richland School District Five officials are expected to award a bid for construction of a new magnet school off Broad River Road.

District Spokesman Buddy Price says the school will open in August of 2013, and will be located next to the new Career & Technical Education Center opening this fall.

The school will feed into the center, giving students the opportunity to get certified in specific careers.

"We're really excited about this program of study that will be in this school because it is really preparing kids for their futures," said District Spokesman Buddy Price.

Some nearby residents who talked to WACH-Fox off camera are opposed to the new school because they're afraid it will contribute to traffic problems in the area.  Board member Kim Murphy claims there aren't enough students in the district to justify a new school.

"There's absolutely a need to built it," counters Price.  "We're trying to address high school needs for space that's filled up over the last few years."

Price says the new school won’t have any attendance lines so students from Irmo, Dutch Fork and Chapin high schools would be allowed to transfer.
