COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Four people died in an early morning crash at the intersection of George Rogers Boulevard and Shop Road when a car crashed into a Farm Bureau office building around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Columbia Police confirmed four people died in the crash, but didn't confirm the identities of those who died.
Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said investigators are working with the Richland County coroner's office to identify the victims. She said the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, the collision resulted in the death of 2 males and 2 females.
Further information on the identity of the individuals is being held until positive identification can be made through X-Rays, DNA, or other methods. Once a positive identification is made and all families are notified additional information will be released.
George Rogers Boulevard was closed from Bluff Road to Assembly Street. Police Chief Randy Scott said all four people in the vehicle were killed when it ran off George Rogers Boulevard, crashed into a building, and exploded in flames.
Investigators were trying to determine why the driver lost control of the vehicle.
