COLUMBIA (WACH) - The wait continues for Atlanta based developer Bright-Myers. Tuesday night Columbia City Council again postponed taking a vote on the proposed sale of the Capital City Stadium property to the company. Bright –Myers wants to develop retail space on the property, which would include a Walmart store.

Council instead voted to approve conducting a property evaluation to determine how Rocky Branch Creek would be impacted by the company’s development plans. Mayor Steve Benjamin says the move should not be viewed as anti-business or anti-development. He says after the study is completed, city leaders will have a tool to use to make the best decision concerning the property.

Once a consultant is hired to conduct the study, it’s expected to take 4 to 6 weeks to complete. The mayor instructed City Manager Steve Gantt and his staff to begin the process of finding a consultant and says they have up to $100,000 to get it done.

The proposed sale of Capital City Stadium has been the subject of much controversy lately. Those against the sale say the proposed development would negatively affect their quality of life, while those for it say it would create hundreds of news jobs for the city.
