COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Nearly 1.3 million South Carolinians will be packing their bags and traveling during the last ten days of 2011.
About 92-percent of those people will be driving; six percent flying. Overall, that's a three percent increase from last year's travel totals.
AAA of the Carolinas is reporting that lower gas prices have more people traveling to see family and friends. Gas prices in the Palmetto State have dropped 72-cents per gallon since peaking in May.
If you're one of those travelers taking to the roadways, Spartanburg may be a good stop along the way. Spartanburg, at $3.00/gallon, has the cheapest average gas in the state. Myrtle Beach, at $3.07/gallon, has the most expensive average. The state average is $3.03/gallon.
For those travelers taking to the air, you may have fewer people joining you compared to last year's holiday season.
Airlines for America is predicting about 43-million travelers will be boarding planes during the three-week holiday period.
That's down one-percent from last year. One-percent may not sound like much, but it adds up to about 20-thousand less people a day.
Planes will still be full, however, since airlines have cut back on the number of flights.
Safe travels and happy holidays!
