COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Some incarcerated Department of Juvenile Justice teens lending a hand to families outside the facility.

Friday the agency holding a press conference highlighting a project that allows those at DJJ to help construct the frame for homes with Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity.

Officials say the youths will work on the frame on the grounds because they can't leave the premises.

“There’s so much going on. We have interior design folks from inside that are going to help us decorate the inside of the house so it’s not just this one house,” says Roy Kramer, Executive Director Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity.

Kramer says he hopes this project will pick up steam and more homes will be built by some at DJJ.

Once complete a Midlands crane company will remove the house from the DJJ property and bring it to the new homeowner.

“It’s just a big step for me and I’m so excited and the accessibility that I’ll have its just wonderful, says Ms. Jackson, Future homeowner.

Jackson has always had a dream of being a homeowner particularly since her son has Cerebral Palsy and is physically and mentally challenged and requires the fulltime use of a wheelchair.

Officials say the group will officially start construction Monday.
