AIKEN, S.C. (AP) -- A new round of layoffs is starting next month at a former nuclear complex in South Carolina.

The Aiken Standard reports Saturday that only 18 Savannah River Remediation employees took buyouts before a Friday deadline.

Earlier this month, the liquid waste contractor's cuts were approved by the U.S. Department of Energy. If 100 employees didn't opt to leave voluntarily by Nov. 18, SRR said it would need to lay people off starting in December.

Earlier this year, Savannah River Remediation and another contractor, Wackenhut Services, each cut 100 positions.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, SRS' primary contractor, employs about 5,500 at the site and was given Department of Energy clearance to cut as many as 1,400 jobs.
