COLUMBIA (WACH)- There's an app for pretty much everything these days, but there are also apps out there, meant to keep you safe.

From sex offender locator apps to apps that won't allow drivers to text behind the wheel, there are hundreds of thousands of ones to chose from.

Columbia resident Matt Mclees' first aid app helped him in a pinch.

"Last year, I had a friend who was deep-frying a turkey. Oil spilled over to his legs. He had pretty severe burns," said Mclees. "I was able to pull up information on my first aid app and help."

Midlands technology expert Stephen Miano, who owns That Computer Store in Irmo, uses a GPS app that helps him keep tabs on his daughter.

"If she goes missing, or if we're at an amusement park and she splits, I can check my phone and say where's my kid," said Miano.

Miano adds safety-minded apps really make phones useful, especially for parents.

According to Apple, there are more than 500,000 apps for iPhones. There are more than 200,000 available for Android phones.
