COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford is taking a step into 2012 presidential politics in an opinion piece that praises businessman Herman Cain and criticizes special interests and media sensationalism.

Sanford said in an op-ed column published in Thursday's The State of Columbia that Cain is an example of candidates the media writes off but who catch on with voters. She says the media focuses too much on controversy and not enough on substance. The Post and Courier of Charleston first published the column last week.

Sanford told The Associated Press she's not endorsing Cain and doesn't know who she'll vote for in South Carolina's primary.

She endorsed Nikki Haley in the 2010 gubernatorial race after divorcing then-Gov. Mark Sanford. He had an affair with a woman from Argentina.
