SUMTER (WACH) -- Police in Sumter say a suspect was shot Thursday after pointing an assault riffle at officers.

The Sumter Police Department says the driver of a Cadillac failed to stop when officers tried to pull over the vehicle around 10:30 p.m.

The driver eventually came to a stop on the 30 block of Lincoln Avenue when 24-year-old Aqueme Randolph came out from the passenger side of the car and pointed an AK-47 toward the officers.

Police say Randolph ignored their instructions and fired a shot, hitting him in the leg.

Another weapon was found in the vehicle, along with marijuana and crack cocaine, according to investigators.

Randolph was transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries.  He was later released and transported to the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Facility to be charged.

Lakesha Cooley and Randy Maple, who were also in the vehicle at the time, were also taken into custody.

The State Law Enforcement Division has been asked to investigate the incident.
