(AP) -- COLUMBIA  -- The chairman of the Sumter County Council says Continental Tire will build a plant in his county and bring up to 1,700 jobs, but a company spokeswoman says the deal isn't finished.

Councilman Eugene Baten said he received a call Friday from County Administrator Gary Mixon confirming the $500 million to $1 billion deal with the German tire maker with an official announcement coming Thursday.

But Continental Tire spokeswoman Kathryn Blackwell said later Friday that the company has not decided where to locate its new plant. Gov. Nikki Haley's spokesman Rob Godfrey said the office doesn't comment on economic development matters. Mixon did not immediately return a message.

Last week, Bridgestone Americas Inc. announced it would spend $1 billion on two projects in Aiken County, creating 850 jobs by 2020.
