COLUMBIA (WACH) - South Carolina Democrats are taking aim at Governor Nikki Haley after she made bold claims about the state's new voter photo ID law.

In a recent interview with WHNS, a Fox affiliate in Greenville, Haley said she would personally drive people who lack a form of photo identification to the Department of Motor Vehicles so they could get a new photo ID card.

"Find me those people who think that this is invading their rights.  Find, and I will go take them to the DMV myself and help them get that picture ID," Haley said in the interview.

South Carolina Democrats say the Tucker and Cunningham family of Columbia called the Governor's office and requested assistance for their 76-year-old cousin, and Army veteran Robert Tucker. However, Democrats say the office was not aware of the claim Haley made in the WHNS interview and was not able to help the family.

"Nikki Haley has proved once again unable to tell the truth," said state Democratic Party chair Dick Harpootlian in a statement released by the party. "Whether she is misstating her job record, her own employment record or lying to Army veterans like Robert Tucker, it's obvious she just doesn't have it in her to tell the truth."

It is estimated that roughly 180,000 people could be impacted by the new photo ID law, which still faces approval from the U.S. Justice Department.

WACH Fox has contacted Governor Haley's office to get their response to the state Democrats' comments.
