COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Once again conditions will rise back into dangerous territory for the Midlands.

High temperatures in the upper 90s combined with dewpoints in the 70s will make a dangerous heat and humidity cocktail for the human body. Heat Index Values, or 'feels like temperatures,' above 105 degrees are hazardous to the human body.

Conditions will begin to hit the dangerous category Wednesday and push through the weekend. The only relief will come in the form of scattered afternoon showers and storms.

Last week the Midlands broke a 48 day streak of highs at or above 90 degrees. This was the second longest streak in the areas history. Making matters worse, this years streak began in May while the top ranking 1986 streak started in June.

Abnormally hot conditions are also aggrevating the state's already intense drought situation. Last week the Drought Response Committee upgraded Kershaw, Lexington and Richland Counties into the moderate state of drought. The driest part of the state includes Horry and Marion Counties.

At the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, rain fall totals are five inches behind where they need to be for the year.

Heat is one of the leading weather killers for the southeast. Midlands residents are reminded to exercise caution in these conditions. Remember to pay special attention to children, pets and the elderly.
