COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina inspector general who quit after seven weeks on the job says a dispute about investigators' independence prompted him to leave.

George Schroeder said Friday he resigned after trying to work out differences with Gov. Nikki Haley and her chief of staff on their plans to let other agencies hire and pay for investigators.

Schroeder said that would mean the investigators could be put in the position of probing the agencies employing them. Haley's spokesman said that's how investigators were to be paid under the executive order she issued creating the job.

Schroeder said he didn't hear from the governor's office until after The Associated Press broke the story that he had quit weeks earlier.
