JAMES ISLAND (WACH, WCIV, AP) -- A bicyclist is dead after a fall from the westbound lane of the James Island Connector in the Lowcountry.

Officials say he was hit by an AT&T van that drifted on to the shoulder at around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday and knocked into the marsh, about 30 to 40 feet below.

At around 9:30 a.m. several air boats were in the marsh to mark the scene and clear the man's body.  Meanwhile, on the road above, the bike and the rider's helmet remained on the bridge.

Authorities say it took them about an hour after the wreck to recover the body of 54-year-old Mitchell Hollon.

Investigators say Hollon was an anesthesiologist and an avid cyclist.

The van that hit the cyclist had damage to its front end.  Police say the driver was at fault.

Investigators with the Charleston Police Department say AT&T is cooperating with the investigation.

No charges have been filed.
