CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Facebook has closed the account of South Carolina prisoner serving 60 years for killing a Goose Creek man.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported a Facebook official said Wednesday the account of 28-year-old Michael Jason Maxwell has been closed.

Maxwell is an inmate at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville. Despite his conviction, he had maintained a Facebook page that included hundreds of friends. The newspaper contacted Facebook after it was alerted to the page by the victim's family.

Corrections officials say they searched Maxwell and his cell and could not find a phone through which he might have been able to maintain the account.
