COLUMBIA (WACH)  More than 1,600 SCE&G customers remain without power Thursday afternoon after a line of severe thunderstorms pushed through the Midlands Wednesday evening downing trees and power lines.

As of 1 p.m. the majority of customers without power remain in Aiken, Allendale, Colleton, Fairfield and Richland counties. More than 3,000 customers were without power earlier in the day.

At the height of the storm more than 14,000 Midlands residents were without power, according to SCE&G. The largest areas without power were Lexington, Saluda, Richland and Fairfield Counties.  Viewers from Winnsboro, Dentsville, Irmo and downtown Columbia have reported strong winds, heavy rain and intense lightning.

The storms packed intense lightning, winds over 70 mph and quarter-sized hail.  The storms hit the northwestern counties first and pushed towards the southeast.  Columbia resident Candi James reported a large tree fell onto her roof.

Additional severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday.  The SkyWACH Weather Team will track any storms that develop.
