COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has named a new state inspector general to replace an appointee who quietly quit in frustration in April.

Haley says James V. Martin will replace George Schroeder. While Schroeder was paid $110,000, Martin says he'll be paid $98,500.

Martin worked for state government from 1972 to 1998, including 22 years with the State Law Enforcement Division. Haley noted his background in fraud investigations.

"I am excited about the duties and responsibilities of the inspector general," Martin said. "I want to make sure that every tax dollar is sent in accordance with established policy, rules and regulations."

Haley created the office in March with an executive order and made Schroeder the state's first inspector general.

Schroeder said last month he left the job because he was having difficulty figuring out how to make the office work under the executive order without the Legislature passing a law creating the operation.
