COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Officials say a computer glitch is responsible for as many as 1,500 unemployed workers in South Carolina going three weeks without getting their jobless benefits.
John Finan of the state Department of Employment and Workforce told The State of Columbia that a glitch in the computer code for the system that issues the benefits caused the initial problem around May 21.
Finan says that as workers fixed one thing, another problem cropped up. He says programmers told him they should have the problem completely fixed by the end of the weekend.
Finan called the glitch minor, but for 57-year-old Bryan Keller, of Joanna, the lack of benefits has led to his gas and water being shut off, and his auto insurance may lapse next.
