COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Crews worked to stop sewage from spilling into the Saluda River Tuesday morning after a pipe became blocked near the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

Wastewater maintenance officials say the sanitary sewer overflow was discovered shortly after 8 a.m. in the 500 block of Wildlife Parkway.

Adam Myrick, with the Department of Health and Environmental Control, says they are working to determine what course of action should be taken, if any.

As for the safety of the water in the area and downstream, Myrick says dilution is the solution.  At the moment, there's no cause for concern but DHEC is urging people planning to use the river to use caution and be aware of the situation.

It's unsure how many gallons of waste have been spilled into the river near the popular summer-time recreation area at this time.

This is the second spill in the area the city has experienced in one week.

WACH Fox News has a crew on the scene and will bring you more as it becomes available.
