Gas prices drop ahead of Memorial Day

COLUMBIA (WACH) – Gas prices are falling for the second straight week just in time for the Memorial Day travel weekend.

According to ColumbiaGasPrices.com, average retail gasoline prices in the Columbia area have fallen 7.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.61 per gallon as of Sunday.

The national average fell 8.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.83.

Including the change in gas prices in Columbia during the past week, prices Sunday were $1.03 per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 0.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

The national average has increased 0.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands $1.04 per gallon higher than this time a year ago.

Currently, South Carolina has the lowest gas prices in the nation.  The Palmetto State trailed behind western states for several weeks.  Greenville, Spartanburg, Myrtle Beach and Columbia all rank in the top ten cities with the lowest averages across the county.
