COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The Columbia community joined local officials and first responders on Thursday when the City of Columbia hosted the Patriot Flag as part of its national tour honoring those who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The 30x58 foot Patriot Flag was displayed at the intersection of Main and Laurel streets, suspended by two fire department ladder trucks.
“I encourage everyone in Columbia and throughout the Midlands to join us as we pay our respects to all those who lost their lives on that horrific day and pledge to keep their memories burning in our hearts forever,” Mayor Steve Benjamin said.
The Patriot Flag Ceremony in front of City Hall featured a prayer by South Carolina Representative James Smith.
The Patriot Flag began its journey in San Diego on September 10, 2010 and will travel to a new state every week before flying in New York City, Washington DC and Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2011 as part of the 9/11 Tenth Year Anniversary observances.
The Patriot Flag was displayed until 1 p.m.
"This is a good thing to show patriotism to those 9/11 victims as well as all the first responders," said Interim Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins.
