COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina legislators have reached a tentative agreement on a bill requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.
A committee of House and Senate members agreed Wednesday to keep the bill about photo ID, reaching a compromise that removes a proposal creating a two-week window of early voting before Election Day.
Republicans say the photo ID requirement assures voter integrity. Democrats say it will suppress the votes of minority, disabled and elderly residents.
The bill allows adults who don't have a driver's license to get a free photo ID. But Democrats say that will cost taxpayers and be burdensome for voters.
The conference committee expects to sign the agreement later Wednesday.
The issue died last year because House and Senate members were unable to reach a compromise.
