NORTH CHARLESTON (WACH) -- Two big names in South Carolina announced a partnership Tuesday that incorporates renewable energy into manufacturing.

Boeing and SCE&G have teamed up to cover the roof of the Boeing 787 assembly plant in North Charleston with solar panels.  The green energy producers will cover a 10 acre area.

SCE&G officials say the panels will allow the plant to operate completely on renewable energy.

The panels will provide up to 2.6 megawatts of electricity for the plant.  That's enough energy to power 250 homes.  SCE&G officials say the installation will be the largest in the Southeast by production capacity, and the sixth largest in the U.S.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham says Boeing is showing leadership on green energy initiatives and says he hopes that will encourage other businesses to do the same.

"Our 787 Dreamliner is manufactured using fewer hazardous materials and designed to consume less fuel, and produce fewer emissions. It only makes sense that our business operations in South Carolina reflect the environmental progressiveness of the airplane we’ll build here," says Jim Albaugh, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
