COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Darla Moore, the University of South Carolina's largest donor who was replaced on the school's board of trustees, says she isn't interested in returning to the board if given the chance, according to one lawmaker.
Tuesday, Sen. John Courson says he spoke with Moore late last week about a bill designed to give the General Assembly an at-large appointment to the board, which could bring her back as a trustee. Courson says Moore is opposed to the bill.
Moore, a Wall Street financier and benefactor, was ousted by Gov. Nikki Haley three weeks ago. Haley appointed Lexington Lawyer Tommy Cofield to the seat.
Haley recently said she's not wasting any more time on the issue and is confident Cofield can do the job.
After being replaced, Moore announced she was giving a $5 million gift to USC to establish an aerospace research center last week. She requested the center be named after Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a South Carolina native and one of the first black astronauts in the manned space program.
Moore has donated $75 million to the school, in total.
Moore was on USC's board since 1999 and the university's business school bears her name.
