COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says Forest Acres restaurant owner Steve Kim was killed last month at the hands of a suspect who had a stolen gun.

Lott explains that crooks are stealing guns out of car glove compartments and other secure areas.

"I'd probably say 90 percent of them, most of our crimes are committed on the street, our murders and robberies, there's going to be a stolen gun in it.," he says.  "These individuals are not going to a store to buy a gun."

Lott also says stolen guns are hard to track down because they're often sold several times.  He says gun owners should record their weapon's serial number.  That will increase the chance of getting the gun back if it's ever stolen.
