COLUMBIA (WACH) --  Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin reaching out to the youth of the city by hosting a mentoring summit.

Several community based organizations from across the Midlands such as Concerned Black Men and Boy Scouts of America set up shop at C.A. Johnson High School Saturday afternoon.

The focus of the summit was to encourage adults to become mentors for Columbia’s youth.

Students got an opportunity to meet local professionals, government officials and leaders in the community.

“We are happy at the outcome. We consider this a successful event. We teamed up with over thirty mentoring organizations. We are happy to see that people came out to support the kids,” says Ivan Carter, organizer.

There were also several activities and games for the students who took part in the summit.

“Our youth needs to know how important their success is to the future of our city,” says Mayor Steve Benjamin.

Organizers say due to the success of Saturday’s summit, the mayors office plans on hosting it again next year.
