Saluda River near the Riverbanks Zoo

LEXINGTON (WACH) -- Health officials are warning of possible high bacteria levels in the Saluda River near the Riverbanks Zoo.
Alpine Utility says a grease blockage caused a sanitary sewer main line to overflow into Stoops Creek just upstream from where it connects with the Saluda River.
Crews discovered the spill that released around 5,000 gallons of sewage into the watershed at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at 1704 Bush River Road.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control says elevated bacterial samples are possible and samples will be tested.
