COLUMBIA (WACH) --  Vowing to lose weight is an easy resolution to make, but one that is even easier to break.

Evelyn May began tackling her resolution to get into shape eight years ago.

“I try to come to the gym about four to five times a week to workout,” May says.

Her dedication has resulted in a weight loss of 100 pounds.

This year May’s resolution will remain the same: exercise on a regular basis.

Just as fitness and eating healthy go together, experts advise to do both in moderation.

“Typically, you want to eat really well 80 percent of the time which includes fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, and 20 percent of the time you can live a little,” recommends YMCA personal trainer Daniel Ramsey.

The key to shedding those unwanted pounds adds Ramsey is to eat less and move more.

Every January, Stronghold Athletic Club sees an increase in membership.

“There is yoga, pilates, step, cycling, and Zumba,” says aerobics instructor Leigh Ann Crum.  “Definitely having options will make exercising more appealing.”

According to Crum, New Year's resolutions result in as much as 30 percent of new business at Stronghold.

“Just people wanting to get involved and figure out how they can get into a workout regime,” Crum says.

If you're new to working out, Crum suggests that beginners try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise three times a week.  Once that becomes comfortable, you can increase your workout time and intensity.  Don’t be afraid to try something new.

While you can expect crowded gyms during the next couple of months, May says she will keep pushing through, because everyday is a new beginning.
