CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Scientists from around the world are gathering on the South Carolina coast for a global conference on shellfish.

The main theme of the four-day conference that opens in Charleston on Wednesday is the progress made in restoring shellfish beds during the past 25 years.

On Friday, there's a panel discussion of the effect of this year's oil spill on shellfish habitat in the Gulf of Mexico. That session includes speakers from Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.

Assistant administrator for fisheries at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Eric Schwaab speaks on Thursday.
