Columbia, SC - Columbia city council gave initial approval to a curfew measure Wednesday that would apply to teens 17 and under.  They would have to be off the streets by 11pm or face a $100 fine or two days in jail.

There are some exceptions to the curfew.  College students under 17 with a valid student ID would be exempt from the rule as well as certain provisions made for teens 17 and under who may have a job that keeps them out past 11pm.

The proposed ordinance, approved on first reading, still needs final approval.  It is part of the city's plan to help cut down on crime, especially in Columbia's entertainment district, specifically Five Points where there were several shootings over the summer.

The city attorney says he would still like to discuss more specifics of the ordinanace with city council members but did not offer any more details following Wednesday's vote.
