COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley says the federal government needs to make sure nuclear waste taken from South Carolina's Savannah River Site is moved permanently to Nevada.

After a tour of the site on Thursday, Haley said it's important that South Carolina's next governor be willing to fight plans by President Barack Obama to end a project to store the nation's nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in the Nevada desert.

Haley's Democratic opponent agrees. A spokeswoman for Vincent Sheheen says he wants to see the federal government keep its promise to move the radioactive material left over from building nuclear bombs at the South Carolina site.

Haley says SRS is as important an employer in South Carolina as BMW or Boeing.
