COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Traffic came to a halt and was backed up for several miles on I-20 Thursday afternoon after a tractor trailer burst into flames.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a car crossed from the eastbound lanes into westbound traffic near Augusta Road at mile-marker 57 around 11 a.m.

The driver of the semi was unharmed.  The three passengers in the car were transported to the hospital.  The extent of their injuries is unclear at this time.

As crews battled the flames and worked to clear the wreckage from the roadway, traffic backed up in the westbound lanes for over six miles.

Officials opened the roadway around 4 p.m.

Traffic in the area remained congested due to drivers finding their way back to the Interstate.
