MIAMI (AP) -- Powerful Hurricane Igor is threatening to become a Category 5 storm as it churns far out over the Atlantic.

Igor is currently at Category 4 strength Monday with maximum sustained winds near 150 mph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Igor could reach Category 5 strength later in the day.

Igor is located about 940 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands and is moving west near 13 mph.

Farther west in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Julia is nearing the southern Cape Verde Islands. Julia is about 30 miles south-southwest of the southernmost islands. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Officials have issued a tropical storm warning for parts of the Cape Verde Islands.
