COLUMBIA (WACH) -- South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner has been named National Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Coach Tanner picked up the honor after the Gamecocks earned South Carolina's first men's national championship.

USC was the first team to ever win six consecutive games on the way to winning the title at the College World Series in Omaha.

The win was a first for USC, but it was Tanner's fourth trip to Omaha -- including three consecutive trips from 2002 to 2004.

Tanner also has coached internationally, having served five times as head coach for the USA National Baseball team. He also served as an auxiliary coach for the 2000 Olympic team that won a gold medal in Sydney.

Tanner became South Carolina's coach in 1996 after nine seasons coaching at North Carolina State.
