COLUMBIA (AP) -- A South Carolina senator says lawmakers have a chance to quit talking about overhauling education funding and finally do it.

Senate Education Chairman John Courson said Thursday the elections give lawmakers a limited opportunity to revamp the state's piecemeal funding system for public schools. In November, voters will elect a new governor and new education superintendent.

Legislators have talked for years about the need for an overhaul but have made no progress. The last major funding initiatives were passed in 1977 and 1984. But lawmakers' complaints about their unfairness have grown.

Courson says eight senators from both parties will meet over the summer and fall. The Columbia Republican says the governor- and superintendent-elects will be invited to participate.
