COLUMBIA -- Newly released emails appear to shed some light on the investigation into the car crash involving Columbia Mayor-Elect Steve Benjamin.

Earlier this month, WACH Fox News requested emails from the city through the Freedom of Information Act.

We have yet to receive those emails.

However, The State Newspaper reports it has received the emails.

Those emails show that shortly after the crash, city managers urged then Police Chief Tandy Carter to include the Department of Public Safety in the investigation.

One day later, Carter said his department alone would handle the case.

That investigation remains open.
