COLUMBIA -- Legislators joined patient advocates, health care provider organizations and the insurance industry at the State House Tuesday.

They gathered to celebrate an agreement that ensures the coverage of routine costs for patients enrolled in certain cancer clinical trials.

On advocate says it's about time South Carolina got on board.

"We are not the first state to do this," says Terri Matson.  "But we are glad to add to it, because this is only going to enhance the future of care for all cancer patients."

This makes South Carolina the 31st state to put a plan like this into effect.

Some who spoke say this represents South Carolina stepping forward.

The state has about 20,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
