COLUMBIA, S.C. -- As the situation in the Gulf continues to develop, many are questioning how this issue will ultimately impact BP's image.

The British oil giant has worked very hard to advertise its efforts to be a green corporation by investing in various eco-friendly ventures.

According to one media expert, BP will have a very hard time getting the public to forget the recent events.

"It's going to take a long time to recoup that public trust that they had," said Lisa Sisk.

The University of South Carolina Public Relations professor said Wednesday that the corporation is using history as a guide on how to handle this big, big problem.

"They've obviously learned from the literal textbook example of Exxon Valdez where Exxon did absolutely everything wrong," she said.

Sisk says the only way to prevent destroying the corporation's name is to focus on the facts.

"Keep on top of it, be open, be honest and provide the information from the organization itself rather than having it come from elsewhere," Sisk said.  "And of course, never lie."
