KERSHAW, S.C. (AP) -- Officials say a multimillion-dollar expansion effort at a South Carolina gold mine will create hundreds of jobs over the next two years.

Multiple media outlets report the Haile Gold Mine in rural Lancaster County is poised for a nearly $300 million expansion that will create 800 temporary and permanent jobs over the next two years.

The mine near Kershaw hasn't been active since the early 1990s. Canada-based Romarco Minerals bought the site in 2007, hoping new technology could help turn the mine into a producer again.

Romarco chief executive Diane Garrett says the expansion will create 500 jobs during construction and another 300 permanent jobs. Romarco expects the mine to produce at least 140,000 ounces per year for at least 12 years starting in 2012.
