COLUMBIA (AP) -- Seven years after South Carolina changed the way it required drivers to prove their eyesight is adequate, the state has failed to establish a system of notifying people when they need to take vision tests or track who has done so.
The state Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed Monday that it has no way of enforcing a requirement that drivers prove every five years their vision is good enough for them to get behind the wheel.
That requirement remained in place in 2003 when the state extended the life of driver's licenses from five to 10 years. Under the law, which is not being enforced, drivers who don't prove their eyes are roadworthy face a $50 fine.
Legislators plan Wednesday to discuss eliminating the five-year eye checks.
