Councilman Vic Rawl, Visiting Columbia
COLUMBIA -- Rawl, currently on the Charleston County Council, announced his bid for senate running opposite Jim DeMint earlier Monday and made his way across the Midlands as he outlined why he thinks he'd make a difference to the state, and he was not easy on the incumbent senator, accusing him of pursuing personal interests over the interests of citizens.
"If you've got time to write a book, you're not representing your constituents," he stated.
This comes right on the heels of fellow Democrat Chad McGowan pulling out of the race in February, citing family matters.
In the June primary, Rawl will face former auto industry manager Mike Ruckes of Summerville.
The councilman touched briefly on the health care debate saying, "Realistically, there's an awful lot of political capital that's been wasted on both the right, the left, and, of course, the center. If we don't have something passed, there's no way to deal with the issue."
Rawl went onto criticize why military spending wasn't on the table alongside other governmental budget cutbacks.
When asked about his chances of swinging a bipartisan vote in this current climate, Rawl replied, "I've beat Republicans three times in all the elections I have been involved in. All of them have been incumbents."
