On Friday a plane filled with 18,000 pounds of rice and beans left the Columbia Metropolitian Airport bound for Haiti. Aboard the plane was Columbia's Mount Horeb Methodist Church member and Haiti Children's Project volunteer Don Gray.

"There's a lot of shortages of food and fuel," said Gray.

Gray said he wanted to help after spending days watching the human suffering on the news.

"I think it is going to make me feel satisfied that something is being done to help these people who need help so desperately," said Gray.

"This is just an awesome day for Columbia," said Founder of the Haiti's Children Project Wade McGuinn.

McGuinn is the brain behind Gray's trip. He says the 18,000 pounds of rice and beans will go to an orphanage.

"We watch this stuff on TV and it's hard to get connected in our town. But we've got so many mission partners here in South Carolina and for them to get together to do something this tangible it's unbelievable," said McGuinn.

The plane is expected to reach Haiti by four on Friday. Another trip is planned for next week. If you would like to help please visit http://www.haitichildrenproject.org/about-haiti-children-project.
