COLUMBIA (WACH) - On Monday more than 450 University of South Carolina students volunteered time on their day off to take part in the annual Martin Luther King National Day of Service.  Groups of students worked at 19 different locations in Columbia.

“It shows that we can all you know wake up early on a day off. We’re in college and we are struggling but we still give back to the community,” said USC student Aaron Henderson.

Henderson and his classmates spent their day helping out at Harvest Hope. They filled thousands of boxes full of food that will go to needy families.

“I live on campus I am able to have food but there’s families out there who really need it,” said USC Student Leticia Graham.

For 13 years it has been a tradition for current students to take part in service projects in and around the Columbia community. USC officials say the event gives volunteer the chance to work with various local non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Home Works of America, and Reliant Hospice.
