COLUMBIA -- The State Treasurer's Office announced Wednesday it returned a record $12.43 million in unclaimed property to South Carolinians in 2009.
More than 20,000 citizens and businesses received checks from the state for funds they had either lost or forgotten, said State Treasurer Converse Chellis.
The state considers unclaimed property to be any financial asset not claimed by its owner for a period of time; usually five years. Assets include checking accounts, stocks and bonds, insurance proceeds and other funds.
The $12.43 million returned in 2009 narrowly edged out the previous record set in 2008 by $5,000.
