ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina troopers say an Orangeburg County deputy has been charged with driving under the influence after crashing a patrol car.

Authorities told multiple media outlets that Robert Ayers was arrested Wednesday night after running into a ditch south of Orangeburg. He was off duty.

Troopers say Ayers failed several sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test.

Sheriff Larry Williams says Ayers has been pulled off the force while the incident is reviewed.

Ayers was released from jail on bond. A phone listing could not be found, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Ayers is the second officer charged with DUI in South Carolina this week. Authorities say a Charleston officer was arrested after hitting a parked car last weekend.
