Police aim to make sure Midlands residents celebrate safely.
COLUMBIA -- That New Year’s Eve toast at midnight could end up costing upwards of $10,000, if you’re caught drinking and driving.
“But that’s is just the financial cost,” says Josef Robinson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. “We have to look at the injuries sustained if you’re in a collision. There are severe consequences for a DUI, and one night is just not worth it.”
Law enforcement agencies across the Midlands are teaming up to keep motorists safe on the last day of the year.
“We’re going to be very visible on interstates, secondary roads, U.S. roads,” says Robinson, “and our message is clear.”
Some people got the memo and decided to spend Thursday evening at Finlay Park in an alcohol-free, family-friendly environment.
“It’s meant to give families something to do on New Year’s Eve in a fun, safe environment,” said Joan Sorenson of Columbia Parks and Recreation.
No matter how you celebrate, police want you to make sure your plans include making it to 2010 alive and well.
