COLUMBIA -- Approximately 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage was released from two separate city of Columbia wastewater locations Tuesday, according to city officials.
Columbia wastewater management officials say they were notified of a broken collection line in the 3100 block of Danfield Road at 11 a.m. that caused sewage to leak into a storm drain that leads to Eight Mile Creek.
Wastewater officials say a root blocking a different collection line in the 2200 block of Lake Murray Boulevard caused a backup that released sewage into a tributary leading into Rawls Creek.
This is the second time in two weeks sewage has overflowed the city sewage city. Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Ida overflowed the city sewage system November 11 and released raw sewage into the Broad, Congaree and Saluda rivers. The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control advised the public to avoid contact with the rivers for several days after that release.
A DHEC spokesman says the agency has not posted any advisories related to the two spills Tuesday.
