COLUMBIA -- 6-year-old India Hampton is recovering tonight after suffering second degree burns during an accident at a city of Columbia park Tuesday afternoon.
According to Hampton's mother, Natasha Robinson, an 11-year-old boy who was at St. Anna's park as part of an after-school program somehow got hold of lighter fluid and set a fire. Robinson said the boy then asked her daughter to help put at the fire and she was burned attempting to stamp it out.
Columbia police and paramedics responded to the park Tuesday. Hampton was originally taken the Palmetto Health Richland where doctors determined her injuries were so severe they transferred her to the Augusta Burn Center. Hampton spent two nights there prior to being released.
Now Hampton's mother is asking questions about how a child taking part in a city after-school program could be unsupervised long enough to light a fire.
"I think it's just negligence period. If it didn't happen to her, it was going to happen to somebody," said Robinson.
WACH FOX News called the city of Columbia to ask why children were left unsupervised. Assistant City Manager Alison Baker declined an on-camera interview request, but did say via phone the city is comfortable with the way things were handled. The city also dismissed the claim that negligence contributed to the accident.
