COLUMBIA -- Republican State Senator Mick Mulvaney formally announced his candidacy for Congress Tuesday in the Midlands. Mulvaney made the announcement during a 10 a.m. news conference in Newberry. He held two similar announcements in the Upstate Monday.

Mulvaney is set to take on 5th District Congressman John Spratt next year. Spratt was first elected in 1982 and is currently the state's longest-serving Congressman. He chairs the powerful House Budget Committee.

Spratt was booed by his constituents at a town hall meeting on health care two months ago. The 5th District stretches more than 130 miles across the state covering parts of 14 counties.
