CHARLESTON, S.C (AP) -- An animal rights group wants Charleston to ban the popular horse-drawn carriages that give tourists a glimpse of the city's historic district.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Tuesday there have been six reported mishaps with carriages in a year. PETA Director Debbie Leahy said banning carriages is the only way to ensure the safety of the horses, passengers and motorists.
There was no immediate response from the city.
It's the second time in recent years PETA has targeted animal treatment in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
The group earlier alleged Mepkin Abbey was running a factory farm in its egg operation. Because of publicity, the monks turned to growing mushrooms for income.
